John
hails from Wisconsin. He has taken to modeling the American
Freedom Train in HO scale and has graciously agreed to share
with us images and notes of his progress. It is still very
much a work in progress, so check back every month or so to
see what's new. John is basing much of his model on the Lionel
AFT cars from the 1970's. Click on any of the images to see

This

step also sets the depth for the grills.

AFT

The
grill end of the car in progress. The framing for the grill
is individual pieces cut to size and placed. The grill itself
is micro screening. The number of hours into the car at
this point is about 14.

All
the AFT Display cars are being repainted so the train matches.
On some of the cars, it appears they have had their roofs
glued in. So as not to damage them, I will simply repaint
them having to just mask a little more than I would otherwise.

Ripp's update April 4, 2007:
Last
week 80 degrees, today snowing. Modeling trains.
|
 |
Here
are some shots of display cars in the redo process. They have
all been striped repainted and decaled. The roofs on these
five cars could not be removed like most. So the cars had
to masked every time gloss/dull coats were applied. So needless
to say I didn't make a lot of time for photos...
|
 |
As
I am building my train from the ground up, these are cars
number 101 thru 105.
|
 |
You
will notice the blank windows where the display inserts will
go. There will be panels (flush with window edge) on the belt
side and shadowboxes (inset to rear of window) on the exhibit
side, to match the prototype.
